Ben Stephenson

Ben Stephenson started writing his first novel, A Matter of Life and Death or Something, while on hiatus from studying filmmaking and fine art at NSCAD University.

After realizing that his ideas often came in the form of voices, he started listening closely and trying to capture them on the page. The result was the story of a young boy, Arthur, who would become the protagonist of A Matter of Life and Death or Something. The writing started as a hobby, “like gluing bits of twine and old light bulbs in my basement in the middle of the night,” and turned into a passion.

A flourishing member of the Halifax literary scene, Ben’s short stories have appeared in The Coast and the anthology Rememberer. He has completed writing residencies at the Tatamagouche Centre and the Banff Centre. His visual art, including sculpture and installation, has been exhibited in various galleries, and he is the creator of the microGALLERY, an artist-run center in the space left behind by a missing brick in one of NSCAD’s walls. Some of his own artwork illustrates A Matter of Life and Death or Something.

Ben takes inspiration from J.D. Salinger, and highly respects the work of David Foster Wallace, Jonathan Safran Foer, Nicole Krauss, Richard Brautigan, Harper Lee, and Jeffrey Eugenides among others.

He grew up in New Brunswick and has lived on both coasts of Canada. He continues to live in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
