![]() Beyond the PageCanadians are at the polls on Tuesday to have their say on the governance of this country. The environment and the economy seem to be the dominant platforms, but decentralization remains a contentious issue as well. This is especially true for the province of Quebec, where the threat of separation is never far from the fringes, particularly with a growing support for the Bloc Quebecois. To counter this is Reconquering Canada, a collection of essays by prominent Quebec Federalists, those who are speaking out for their province to be united with the rest of the country while retaining its uniqueness and a certain amount of autonomy. Editor André Pratte here sets the scene. If this is an important election issue to you, inform yourself here. |
![]() Author SpotlightIt's hard to get Julie Angus to sit still. This adventurer, scientist and environmental activist can usually be found - with the right GPS system, of course - atop her bicycle, hiking in the woods, and most often in a rowboat. Being the first woman to row across the Atlantic from mainland to mainland also turned her into an author. Wearing all of her hats, she set out to cross the ocean with her then-fiance documenting the changing ecosystem and being pummeled by more than a few hurricanes along the way. She told us a bit about this adventure in this interview and you can now catch her live at any one of her cross-country stops where she'll show a slideshow of the trip. |
