The Group's founding partner and current Chairman, CEO and Group Publisher was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. He entered publishing at McClelland & Stewart in Toronto in 1967, returning to Vancouver early in 1970 to join Jim Douglas and co-found what has become Douglas & McIntyre.

He has been actively involved in government relations and industry association work for almost 30 years, including leading book publishing trade missions to Japan and the Netherlands. For 20 years he was involved with Canada's international trade negotiations as a member, including time as Chair, of the Cultural Industries Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade (SAGIT). His current community involvements include the positions of Vice-Chair of the British Columbia Achievement Foundation; Co-Chair of the Coalition for Cultural Diversity; and Trustee of the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation.

In 1996, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Simon Fraser University; in 1997, he was awarded the Order of Canada.

Scott Steedman is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and was a bookseller at the legendary Duthie Books in Vancouver. He began his publishing career in London, England in 1987. There he was an editor at Dorling Kindersley, now part of the Penguin group, conceiving some of the first titles in the groundbreaking Eyewitness series. He then moved to Paris, where he worked for esteemed publishers Larousse, Gallimard, and Flammarion, and wrote a monthly books column for The Paris Voice.

In 2001, he returned to Vancouver as Editorial Director, Non-Fiction, at Raincoast Books, before joining Douglas & McIntyre in 2005. Scott Steedman became the Associate Publisher of Douglas & McIntyre imprint in January 2007.

CHRIS LABONTE | ACQUIRING EDITOR, FICTION

Chris Labonté, BA, MFA, has worked in the book and publishing industry for over twelve years, and has been a writer for nearly fifteen.

He was the Fiction Editor for PRISMinternational, where he published the likes of Bill Gaston, Matt Cohen, Mark Anthony Jarman and Adam Lewis Schroeder. For nearly four years he was Assistant to the Publisher at Greystone Books before moving to sister imprint, Doulgas & McIntyre in 2005 to become Executive Assistant to Scott McIntyre. Among his numerous duties, he was responsible for contract management, manuscript evaluation (fiction in particular), and rights management.

Labonté completed his Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia in 2001, where he worked with Saeko Usukawa, one of Canada’s finest editors (Jade Peony, Disappearing Moon Café). He has published widely, including three stories in Oberon Press’s Coming Attractions ’02, and the prize-winning story in Pagitica in Toronto’s inaugural literary competition.

Labonté has taught creative writing at the University of British Columbia and Langara College (Vancouver), and will guest edit PRISMinternational’s annual fiction contest this March.
