James Delgado Wins The Deetz Award for Khubilai Khan's Lost Fleet

December 2010

Congratulations to James Delgado who has been awarded The Deetz Award for his gripping account of the seafaring adventures of the Mongol Empire under Khubilai Khan, Khubilai Khan's Lost Fleet. The Society for Historical Archaeology will present this award to James on January 7, 2011 in Austin, Texas.

The Deetz Award is named for James Deetz (1930-2000), whose books are classics for professional archaeologists as well as for nonspecialists. Deetz's accessible and entertaining style of writing gave his books influence beyond the discipline because they are read by a broad audience of non-specialists. The Deetz Award is intended to recognize books and monographs that are similarly well written and accessible to all potential readers. The jury unanimously chose Khubilai Khan's Lost Fleet out of a very large field of submissions, as, they said, it truly meets the criteria established for the award.
