The Ice Pilots captures the behind-the-scene stories of one extraordinary aviation company

Douglas & McIntyre is pleased to announce that Trena White, Acquiring Editor of Non-Fiction, has acquired world rights (including all languages) to the tie-in book for the hit TV docu-series Ice Pilots NWT, now airing in over a dozen countries around the world.

Written by Michael Vlessides, The Ice Pilots: Flying with the Mavericks of the Great White North, will follow the extraordinary adventures of the most unorthodox flyboys on Earth. Renegade Arctic airline Buffalo Airways defies the cold and the competition by using WWII-era propeller planes to haul vital fuel, supplies, and passengers to remote outposts across the world’s last great wilderness. From rookie pilots trying to earn their wings in sometimes hellish conditions to vintage planes that flew over Normandy on D-Day, The Ice Pilots brings its readers on an engaging romp through Arctic skies.

Vlessides braves bone-chilling temperatures, treacherous landings, and iconic owner “Buffalo” Joe McBryan’s famous temper to capture behind-the-scenes stories about the ice pilots, the crew, the passengers, and the communities they serve. Weaving in history about bush pilots, plane crashes, and the north, The Ice Pilots promises to be an entertaining, informative narrative about aviation—the lifeline of this remote world. Douglas & McIntyre will publish The Ice Pilots in January 2012 to coincide with the Canadian launch of Season 3 on History Television. The American premiere of The Ice Pilots took place on April 22 on the National Geographic Channel and US rights are available.
