D&M Publishers launches four months of celebrations to mark 40 years in book publishing

September 2011

D&M Publishers is excited to be launching festivities for their 40th anniversary celebrations beginning this week.

With a publishing program launched in 1971 by co-founders of the publishing enterprise, Jim Douglas & Scott McIntrye, D&M has grown to a company embracing three distinct imprints - Douglas & McIntyre, Greystone Books and New Society Publishers – producing a total of well over 100 books a year – in both print and e-formats – ranging in subjects from art & architecture, food and culture & First Nations studies to environmentalism, nature and science to fiction, international & current affairs and politics. Based in Vancouver, with offices in Toronto and on Gabriola Island, BC, the company employs a staff of 50 with a solid stable of freelancers. It publishes an impressive range of authors from across the country, into the US and now around the world.

As we launch the critical fall publishing season, we plan a wide-ranging campaign to honour this birthday and our accomplishments. Anchored with a QR code we’ve generated for our microsite, we’ve created a distinctive campaign that finds its way into our national print and online ads, postcards & bookmarks, and stylish 1" buttons. officially launches today, September 8th, via our newsletter, social media outlets, and our widely distributed press kit, as well as our own D&M site. The mircosite is the hub of our anniversary celebrations into December, and hosts giveaways, contests, a video series with Publisher Scott McIntyre and Greystone Publisher Rob Sanders called The Book of the Day, and much more.

Events surrounding the anniversary include a D&M tent and celebratory cake (iced with our QR code) at the Vancouver Word on the Street (Sunday, September 25) a party in Vancouver during the Vancouver International Writers Festival (Friday, October 21) and one in Toronto during the International Festival of Authors (Friday, October 28).

As English-Canada’s largest and most internationally accomplished independent publisher, we have much to celebrate, and we hope our colleagues, and the Canadian public, will join us.
