It’s no secret: the English language version of Daniel Poliquin’s most recent novel is in the running for the 2007 Scotiabank Giller Prize.

Today, jury members David Bergen, Camilla Gibb, and Lorna Goodison announced the five finalists for the $40,000 literary prize, including Douglas & McIntyre’s A Secret Between Us, written by Poliquin and translated from the French edition, “La Kermesse,” by Donald Winkler. Selected from a record 108 books submitted, A Secret Between Us is an epic tale of a wartorn society in the midst of astonishing transformation.

All finalists will have the honour of reading at the IFOA’s Closing Night on Saturday, October 27th, and the books will be promoted through the ‘Guess the Giller’ program, with more than 20 public library systems and 950 Scotiabank branches across the country participating. The contest is open to the public and the winner will receive an all-expense paid trip for two to one of Canada’s leading literary festivals.

The winner of this year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize will be announced at a gala black tie dinner and awards ceremony to be held on November 6th. For those not attending the ceremony, Frontier College will host an alternative Giller party –the Scotiabank Giller Light Bash, – the same evening. Each year more than 600 people attend the event to support literacy and celebrate Canadian literature.
